How To Get A Lush Green Lawn

11th May 2023

Getting a lush green lawn can be achieved by following these simple steps:

Mow the Lawn Correctly:

Mow the lawn to the right height, depending on the type of grass you have. Most grasses do best when kept between 2-3 inches (50-75mm) tall. Avoid cutting more than one-third of the grass blade at any one time to prevent stress to the grass.

Water the Lawn Deeply and Infrequently:

Water the lawn deeply, but infrequently. This encourages the roots to grow deeper into the soil and become more drought-resistant. Watering thoroughly once a week with an inch (25mm) of water is optimal. Just ensure that during the summer months, you only water the lawn during the cooler periods i.e evening & night.

Fertilise the Lawn Regularly:

Fertilise the lawn regularly, usually once in the spring and once in the autumn, with a slow-release granular fertiliser that contains nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Follow the instructions on the fertiliser package for the correct application rate.

For your lawn we recommend our Landscaper Pro range from ICL. This comes in several formulations for use in different times of the year, providing grass with a healthy balance of nutrients.

If your lawn has weeds and/or moss you will need to use a fertiliser containing iron & herbicides. Landscaper Pro Triple Action is perfect for this.

We wouldn’t recommend applying both fertiliser and seed in one application. However, you can seed then fertilise or vice versa, providing you allow a gap between each.

Aerate the Lawn:

Aerate the lawn once a year to help the roots receive more air, water, and nutrients. This can be done by using an aerator machine or by using a manual aerator tool like a garden fork.

Overseed the Lawn:

Overseed the lawn in autumn and spring to help fill in any bare spots and improve the density of the grass. Choose a seed that is appropriate for your climate and the desired grass type.

1. Cut the grass
2. Scarify or rake out
3. Aerate if possible, with machine or garden fork
4. Spread seed at recommended rate
5. Apply topsoil at roughly 2-3mm over the area

If you want to apply seed and fertiliser close together, then we would recommend using Sportsmaster Pre-Seeder 8-12-8.

By following these steps, you can get a lush green lawn that is healthy and attractive.
